Rivers Cuomo, AOL Instant Messenger correspondence, January 11, 2002

Rivers Cuomo recorded the initial demo, "It's Only Rock and Roll," to an Olympus handheld digital recorder in 2001.[1][2] "Serendipitous Jam"/"Serendipity" was demoed multiple times at Cello Studios in December 2001 and January 2002 during recording sessions for the band's fourth album, Maladroit. These demos were released on weezer.com. The song was briefly revisited during early demo sessions for the band's then-planned fifth album on March 6, 2002, but may not have been recorded.

Cuomo's original demos were released in 2020 as part of the digital compilation Alone VIII: The Maladroit Years.

Lyrics

Gimme some lovin’
Gimme your lovin’
Gimme that lovin’
I said right now
You better do that

Told you that I want to
Told you that I want to
Told you that I have you
I said right now
You better do that

If it’s only rock and roll
How come music’s in my soul?
Turn it on, c'mon let’s go
Yeah, right now
Yeah

If it’s only rock and roll
How come music’s in my soul?
Turn it on, c'mon let’s go
Yeah, right now
Right now
