Seven More Minutes is the second studio album by the Rentals. It was released on April 13, 1999 and features numerous guest performers including Petra Haden (of That Dog; also appeared on Return of the Rentals), Donna Matthews (of Elastica), Miki Berenyi (of Lush), Tim Wheeler (of Ash), Kevin March, and Damon Albarn (of Blur).
Overview
The album features songs written over the course of several years. The song "Barcelona" was repurposed from a 1993 demo titled "California", while the songs "Must Be Wrong", "Say Goodbye Forever", and "The Cruise" (as "So Soon") were originally demoed in 1995. Rentals frontman Matt Sharp has said that the album's concept began when the band was on tour in Europe [1] and, indeed, the album's lyrical content reflects Sharp's time spent in Europe. The CD's packaging features photographs taken by Sharp in Barcelona. La Rambla appears on the CD sleeve and images of Montjuïc and El Raval in the booklet and cover. When asked about the album's title in an interview with buddyhead.com, Sharp commented "The title means a bunch of different things to different people. It especially means something that is really close to me. But in general it's the amount of time on a snooze for an alarm. When you don't want to leave a certain place you just keep hitting the snooze button over and over. Seven more minutes."
The album was delayed several times due to label demand to tweak it repeatedly, in addition to Sharp's multiple revisions. The record failed to make much chart noise, and the band was derailed for years in its wake.
The album's liner notes dedicate the album: "In Loving Memory of Mykel, Carlie[sic], and Trysta Allan".
