"Susanne" (originally known as "Suzanne") is the second track from the deluxe edition of Weezer's self-titled debut album and a b-side to "Undone - The Sweater Song".

Appearances

Overview

"Susanne" has proven to be one of, if not the, most oft-performed of Weezer's large number of non-album songs, particularly in the pre-Green Album era. The song was successfully returned to set lists on the 2008 Troublemaker Tour. According to the liner notes of the deluxe version of The Blue Album, "Suzanne was a talented A&R assistant at Geffen. In the long months of limbo between completing The Blue Album in October '93 and its eventual release in May '94, she became a big Weezer supporter, doing her best to keep the guys optimistic about their future with Geffen. As the lyrics imply, Suzanne did in fact help Rivers Cuomo out with her spare winter coat when he needed one, and made plates of brownies to cheer him up. Her devotion and aid were perfectly summed up in the song. Before she knew of the songs' existence the guys performed it a cappella for her in her Geffen office. Needless to say, it surprised the hell out of her.

The lyrics "even Izzy, Slash, and Axl Rose" were originally written (and recorded on Rivers' home demo of the song) as "even Kurt Cobain and Axl Rose," but Rivers later decided to change it out of respect for the Nirvana front man after his April 1994 passing. However, upon the song being brought back into 2010 setlists, the original lyric and mention of Cobain was brought back.

Versions

The song was recorded in the summer of 1994, along with "Mykel & Carli" and "My Evaline", and engineered by Paul duGre. This original version appeared alongside those songs as a B-side to various "Undone" singles that year. In 1995, when the band was asked to submit a track to the soundtrack to Kevin Smith's second film, Mallrats, the boys chose "Susanne". However, as is often the case with Rivers, he felt that the track required some sweetening before submission. The original track was remixed by Chris Shaw, given a new lead vocal, as well as keyboard flavorings. This remix was deemed the 'standard' version, and besides appearing on said soundtrack, it was featured on the 2004 deluxe reissue of The Blue Album in place of the original.

In addition to these two official versions, there are high-quality bootlegs of two other mixes, which were presumably leaked during the remix session in 1995. A mix with just the backing vocals (no lead vocal track) - in the form of a mediocre-quality mp3 - had been floating around the internet for some time. On January 18, 2009, albumsix.com boardie BringHomeTheTurkey uploaded high-quality mp3s as well as losseless files of this 'karaoke' style mix, as well as an instrumental (no vocals at all). These versions were taken from a bootleg CD-R purchased by BringHomeTheTurkey on eBay in 2002, and have remained in his personal collection until this board release. These rare versions can currently be found at the audio gallery of albumsix.

Lyrics

Susanne, you're all that I wanted of a girl
You're all that I need in the world
I'm your child
Make me blush, drive me wild
Susanne, you're all that I wanted

When I met you I was all alone
Cold and hungry cryin' on the phone
You baked me brownies and said "don't you cry"
And gave me the coat off your back

Susanne, you're all that I wanted of a girl
You're all that I need in the world
I'm your child
Make me blush, drive me wild
Susanne, you're all that I wanted

Even Izzy, Slash and Axl Rose
When I call you put them all on hold
And say to me that you'd do anything
and all I can do is say that
I haven't much I can give you in return
Only my heart and a promise not to turn
But I'll sing to you every day and every night
Susanne, I'm your man

Susanne, you're all that I wanted of a girl
You're all that I need in the world
I'm your child
Make me blush, drive me wild
Susanne, you're all that I wanted
Of a girl
YEAH!
