Rentals revel in Moog music

During the '80s, after the demise of the poofy haired, new-wave bands, indie-rock tastemakers eschewed all synthesizers.

The exile has pretty much remained in effect for all red- blooded rockers But that didn't stop Matt Sharp from making those long-abandoned Moog and ARP synth sounds the centerpiece of his band the Rentals, who perform with the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Silverchair on Thursday at the FleetCenter.

But it didn't start that way. Sharp, who plays bass in Weezer, originally planned to document his songs in a straightforward, punk-edged manner. "I wanted to make it real honest and do it really quickly," he said.

Those original tapes sat for six months while Weezer went on the road. When Sharp got home, he re-evaluated the tapes and didn't like what heard he He was looking for a new approach when he found an old Moog Source synthesizer in the corner of the studio. One thing led 10 another, and the synth sounds became the common thread for "The Return of the Rentals," released by Madonna's Maverick Records.

"I found some sounds I liked and started using them, which is funny, because I really don't like other keyboards," Sharp said. "I think that most key- board sounds past the early '80s, when everything started getting really slick and sampled, are pretty had. But I had a field day with the Moog."
