A forthcoming Weezer film (title yet to be announced, known by various names including Weezer: Security Threat, The Weezer Movie, and Weezer: Doc Project[a]) is currently in development, directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman.[1] The film is being produced by 87North Productions, and Watch Me Unravel, LLC.[2][3]

Plot

Film insider Jeff Sneider reported that film would be a hybrid mockumentary/concert film that's "a cross between Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and Weird: The Al Yankovic Story". He also stated that a "rivalry" between Reeves and Weezer would be a key part of the plot, referencing Dogstar, who also performed at Weezer's first show in March 1992.[4]

Cast

In addition, directors Joost and Schulman also cameo as themselves.[4]

Production

Sometime before the Voyage to the Blue Planet tour began, directors Joost and Schulman pitched the idea of a half mockumentary-concert film to the band.[4] On September 4, 2024, an LLC under the name "Watch Me Unravel" was incorporated.[6] On October 11, 2024, footage for the movie was filmed with actor Ben Schwartz involving the crowd at a concert during the Voyage to the Blue Planet tour. [5]

Rivers Cuomo first drew mention of the film on Mister Rivers' Neighborhood on December 12, 2024, referring to it as Project X and stating that development of the project would "continue" in February 2025.[7] The name would go unmentioned again until March 26, 2025, where in a thread pertaining to Weezer's twentieth album, Cuomo would mention its release parity with the project.

I forgot to mention we got a big update on this front. We had a call with Weezer and Crush and decided to line this up with Project X.

Filming in Los Angeles began in April, with action scenes for a film called Weezer: Security Threat involving stunts were noted by fans.[3] Cuomo would then mention the movie at Coachella, indicating that they were in the midst of filming.[5]

On April 18, 2025, film insider Jeff Sneider reported that actor Keanu Reeves would play the villain, alongside minor plot details. Ben Schwartz, Juliette Lewis, Eric Andre and Johnny Knoxville reportedly appear alongside the band as themselves.[4]
