Fan recollection
WZMB DJ Ryan Kenny recalled the concert in 2003 in an email to Karl Koch:[3]
I was a DJ at my college radio station, WZMB out of East Carolina University, from 1992-1994. This was an incredible time to be involved in college “alternative” radio, as great new bands seemed bo be popping up all around you and we had first access to them! When the new Weezer came out, the Music Director asked me to take it and a few other CD’s home to listen to so that I can let him know what to play, what not to play, etc. Of course, the moment I put it in my CD player I was blown away. It was on of the greatest CD’s that I had ever heard. I remember taping it (did not have a CD player in the car back then) and listening to it in my car everyday as if it was the only piece of music that existed. Soon thereafter, I found out that they were going to be opening up for Live (Throwing Copper had just come out) at the Ritz in Raliegh. Immediately, I called Weezers promo people (we had easy access to these people, especially for new bands that needed a lot of promoting) and got 4 tickets as well as permission to meet with the band and get some liners for the radio station. I was so f’ing psyched and recruited my best friend and two other girls that lived on our floor in the dorms (the one girl was a HUGE Live fan). On the way to the show, Brian and I sang harmonies to every song on the disc (Surf Wax America being a favorite to harmonize with) and could not wait to get there. We rolled in a few hours early and headed towards Weezer’s bus which was behind the building.
Being a little nervous and not sure what I was going to say, I walked over to the bus and knocked on the door. When Brian (the guitarist)came out, I was greeted like an old friend. He brought me on the bus, where Rivers and the rest of the guys were playing video games. They had some keyboard (kinda like a Casio SK1) and made 3 or four great liners for the station using the keyboards and some 3 part harmonies. It was AWESOME! Just as I thought I was done, Brian asked me if I wanted an interview, which was much more than I expected. He took me into the colliseum and back stage into a side room. From there, we hung out and chatted for about 15 minutes. Needless to say, I was really nervous and asked some really stupid questions. He was really cool though, and rolled with my nerves. It was during the interview that I learned that Brian had just joined the band prior to recording the CD. He was in another band out in California (I think) and was picked up by Rivers and co. just as they were going into the studio. He was on a super high, talking about how just a few months before he was just another guitarist in another band and now he was playing in front of thousands of kids and they all knew who he was. It was a really cool conversation, afterwhich we took pictures in front of a Janet Jackson poster (we both shared the love of Ms. Jackson). As we headed back outside, Live was doing a sound check. He knew I was interested so we stopped and listened for a bit.
When we go outside, we shook hands and I headed towards my friends who were anxiously waiting. I told them about the liners and the interview and they were dying to hear both. It was then that I realized that in my excitement I recorded over the liners with the interview. Since the whole reason I was there was to get the liners for the station, I decided to head back to the bus, tail between my legs and ask for a few more. Brian answered and told me that they were getting ready to go inside, but he gave me 2 by himself. It was no SK1 recording, but it was cool enough. We shook hands once again and I thanked him up and down. He was a really cool, down to earth guy who was really excited to have some fans. We went inside soon there after and watched an AMAZING show. I remember thinking that it was like seeing the beach boys, how many harmonies there were and how great they sounded. What a great night. I will never forget it. Thanks Brian!
