Weezerpedia Discord Q&A with Karl Koch - April 2022

From Weezerpedia
Jump to: navigation, search

Burnst Jamp: Hey Karl: Was "Blantiss' Theme" off the Amorphous contact page created by you? It feels safe to assume such, but no credit is given so it remains up in the air. Also, do you still have the song "Station I.D."? It was made for Weezerville Radio, but never archived anywhere (to my knowledge)

theangel: Burnst... do you know what a station ID is...

Burnst Jamp: Oops lol (my Blantiss question still stands)

Karl: Pat Finn created Blantiss' Theme actually. And I have a vague recollection of tha 'station ID' thing... i think i just spoke an ID as one might assume, but i think i used a beat too....??? Im sure i saved it somewhere... i'll try to unearth it.

TONTY BLAIR: Hey Karl, Carlos, the K-dog. I was wondering how well documented are the 2003 sessions (in terms of audio recording)? Since we accidentally got an I Can Love demo I guess most of them are well recorded right? So the question is, have you heard full band The Formula?

Karl: theres pretty extensive recordings, acoustic stuff in the office, acoustic stuff at Rod's studio, and electric stuff at several SIR sessions. The Fomula I've heard, yes. Some of my faves of the bunch include 'baby come back' with a wicked Wilson synth bass line and the original minor key (darker, much less happy sounding) "blowing my stack" (wasnt this stuff listed in the recording history?)

Burnst Jamp: Karl, do you have a picture of (or know the issue # of) the French Rock Sound magazine review of Press Any Key?

Karl: i have the issue, so i could dig it up and scan it. no idea of the issue # offhand

April 7, 2022 4:18 PM (#karlification)

Jason B (Little Cat they/them): Karl - would you be opposed to us uploading Dadeye to YouTube?

Karl: I have no say or authority over Joes recordings. There was never a contract or whatnot connecting Amorphous and Joe. Not my place to say what to do or not with them.

alice.band: This is probably just me but the atmos mixes of Beverly Hills and Island in the Sun sound like they have entirely different vocals from the stereo mixes and it throws me the fbleepk off! Would you [Karl Koch] happen to have any insight into why that is?

Karl: all i know is Atmos/Spatial versions of stuff sound weird and i dont know how they are arrived at. I cant understand why any artist is ok with these drastic changes that they have no say or input into.

dylan (HMC): Karl, can you tell us anything about the song "When You're Looking for Love" written by you and Rivers (according to the BMI Repertory)? When and how did that collaboration come about?

Karl: nice one! haha... Well, it was in the VCD as i recall, in a video i shot in a hotel room. i had come up with the vocal idea, and Rivers ran with it on his acoustic guitar. I wanted to include the clip in the VCD but the lawyers were like "ok whats this song it needs official credits?" So it got officially registered as a co-write. It isnt really a complete song at all... we should finish it someday.

Karl: ask him about the "Return Of the rentals" master tapes. he knows where they are, and has been reluctant to deal with retrieving them.

Burnst Jamp: Do you remember for certain that the Christmas CD was sent to members of the Fan Club? A Facebook post of yours from 2014 claims about 1000 of them were sent to fan club members by Geffen, but by December 2000 the official club was almost certainly entirely shelved, and the unofficial club wouldn't be created for another year or two. The timeline doesn't render it impossible necessarily, but it does seem somewhat unlikely

Karl: good quesion, but i do recall being asked for a list, and i supplied the last known current member list of FC member addresses to them a the time. Whether they went ahead with it, and how many actually hit the targets, i cant say for sure. but that was the idea at the time.

Alice: A few questions, first, what the hell is/was Pineapplemon? I was never able to get a clear story from anyone, except eted just now (thank you eted) and I think at some point I tried to recreate it, but was brown and gross. Was there a recipe for it, or was it entirely a gag?

Secondly, do you still manage the social media accounts for weezer? How do you feel about how the band is portrayed on social media, and how people interact or try to interact with weezer?

Karl: i dont know if there was a "real" product. Personally i never sampled the drink! And i share the accounts with Crush (management/label), which is why youll see some very "corporate" type announcements followed by my more personal-type stuff and the tour photos.

King Tom: Was taking a look though the Weezine omnibus and noticed this bit from the winter 1998 edition. Was there something in the works for a summer '98 tour (if they finished the album that spring)? And if so, what was it?

Karl: geez.. good question... i can only assume it was some tour dates or some big show appearance. As we know, no shows actually happened till 2000, as the album 3 sessions collapsed in 1998, until spring 2000 when rehearsals started back up.

April 10, 2022 7:44 AM (#karlification)

Jason B (Little Cat they/them): Do you know which World Domination Tour shows had That Dog as an opener? Right now the =wp= page for the tour says there was a full leg from July 21 '95 through August 20 '95 that had That Dog and Teenage Fanclub

Karl: as far as i can recall that 3 band bill was the entire tour. But I dont remember for sure if both bands opened all shows on that run or not. I feel like there was a show in South Carolina maybe that was just that dog and weezer for some reason.

April 11, 2022 1:59 PM (#karlification)

theangel: In the liner notes for the Gimme Skelter compilation, you mention how the band rehearsed "You Won't Get With Me Tonight," you told Rivers what the song reminded you of, and then he killed the song on the spot. Now that 20+ years have passed and the song's been released in multiple forms, could you reveal the comparison that killed this song for so many years?

Moony B: wasn't it "I Shot the Sheriff" by Bob Marley?

Karl: it was that indeed. I apologize for my brain working in such a convoluted way and accidentally destroying SFTBH. I learned from that to never point out similarities to him again haha

April 19, 2022 6:53 PM (#karlification)

Burnst Jamp: Not a question, but just wanted to show off that I found the original film sampled in Here Comes a Decision!! So cool to hear the original https://youtu.be/v5UYFXCg4PA

Karl: yes i have that on VHS and sampled audio directly form the tape haha!

Jason B: Where did the cover art come from for the three Karlophone releases?

Burnst Jamp: Oh, I actually know this one! The Press any Key cover is from a Nat Geo cover, and the IMFTK cover is art by Pat Finn (per the CD insert). I forget where the Desire 7" art is from, though I swear I used to know

Karl: nice find! yep my family subscribed to Nat Geo since the 60's, and ive kept the subscription up till the current day. scanned it right off the cover... in the name of ART. Also, the "I must find" illustration was not by Pat Finn, it was by an art college friend of mine (who has sadly passed away), Patrick Downey. He was a gifted artist and hilarious dude - he also intoduced me to The Pixies and King Missile (this was 1990, well before the "detachable penis" days). The 7" cover was from a book of old lithographic images (copyright free! heh heh)

April 19, 2022 6:58 PM (#karlification)

Moony B: Did rhino lad ever try and get in contact with you after the incident?

Karl: nope. I would pay $100 to know who it was and what became of him. Hopefully hes running an advanced biological research company or something, solving problems.

Burnst Jamp: Karl, do you know how many Special Goodness promos are out there, do you have them, and (if so) would you be willing to provide pictures/scans of them? There exist incredibly low-quality images of a 1996 Geffen CDr for the Bunny Album as well as a 3 song promo by Loosegrove Records from 1999, but that's about it. It'd be so cool to get more/better pictures of either of those, and to learn about any more that may exist. (this also extends out to the homemade tour copies of the Bunny Album, pics of those would be awesome)

Karl:

Karl: pix were taken a little while ago so some redundant things you didnt ask for
we need people to come forward with their custom tour cds. there were many variations that arent on the =wp= page. we sold them all! i wish id saved a few
land air sea vinyl later in 2022 btw

greg: nice carpet

Karl: 10 year old Home Depot throw rug. really livens up a basement floor

Joel-G: Hey Karl, this demo tape is for sale but it seems kind of off from the pics of the blue label one. Specifically the “g”s, the label being basically white, the lack of space between the “g)” in sweater song, and the cassette shell being different. Just wondering if you have any thoughts on it’s authenticity

Karl: there were never white label ones, we ordered blue, then green, then yellow. i mean it looks pretty legit but there is no possible way it should exist. The pressing place i guess would have possibly made a "generic" one as a test, maybe??? but i dont see why - they just duped the cassettes raw and we had to affix the labels to them, i still have some of the used blue label sticker sheets.

deckra: karl, what information do you have regarding 3 Titres Inédits/the "Always" single/the untitled french green promo? it's somewhat surrounded in mystery. the old weezer.com collectors discography explains that it was a french-only promo that came packed with copies of green, but very few of the 3000 copies (as listed on the back of the release itself) were ever made because Polydor decided they weren't needed due to green's success in france. is this the whole story, or is there anything else you can share about the release? say, the weird re-use of the green album cover with a strange font, the incorrect track lengths, etc.?

Karl: France was always very odd, they really just did whatever they wanted and didnt ask permission, then handed us the strange results with a smile. A perfect example was that yellow cover buddy holly 7". Why did they do that? who knows. Same thing here. Including why didnt they have the font (as incorrect as it was on the album, at least it was close, unlike this)

April 21, 2022 8:05 PM (#karlification)

deckra: how exactly did the september 2004 and 2005 issues of Chevy High Performance magazine end up featuring articles on pat's '67 chevelle? does pat still have the chevelle?

Karl: somehow Pat met some guy who was a writer for the mag and they got to talking and it became A Thing.

April 24, 2022 4:47 PM (#karlification)

Burnst Jamp: Rivers has answered this, but frankly I don't know how accurate his answer is. So, Karl, is this Spring CD real? If so, why's it out so early? And what's with the kerning on Wild at Heart

Karl: That is correct packaging and etc, so its gotta be real. Im actually a step behind as far as when these are supposed to ship, but i do know that CDs do not have the delays that vinyl does. Who posted it in the first place?

greg: it was posted on reddit and a couple other places

dylan (HMC): Someone posted it on the Fan Club group as well. Everyone is unsure about whether it's real because a) Some of the people who bought copies noted how flimsy the packaging was and b) Rivers seemed skeptical about it being real, noting that there's no way they'd put "Spring" in quotes.

Karl: ive got the Spring CD artwork layouts, and that Spring is in quotes, it all lines up. But i cant account for any "flimsiness" unless it was a rush job mockup or somesuch...?

April 24, 2022 4:48 PM (#karlification)

Burnst Jamp: This is more of a Pat thing so I don't know how much you'll know, but I'm wondering what the deal is with this Natural CDr: https://www.discogs.com/release/18990835-The-Special-Goodness-Natural/image/SW1hZ2U6NjA4NjY0MTM=. It really looks like a print-on demand type thing (a lot of us assumed that's what it was for a while), but it being pressed by Dashgo makes me assume that's not the case, since you guys were working with that company a lot around the time the album came out. But, like, what's with the cookie-cutter packaging, and that weird blue border? And why'd it not really get any sort of promotion of any sort?

Karl: i am still in touch with the guy who did/does Dashgo so i will make it a point to find out whats up!

April 26, 2022 6:32 PM (#karlification)

Karl: OK ive learned that DashGo did only release it digitally, but one of the distributors was Amazon Music. And for a little while, on Amazon, you could order a CD-r of a digital title! And thats what this is. Someone had the presence of mind to order it that way and then Amazon got rid of that option (for all releases not just this one). That generic looking CD was the default Amazon CD-r look. I cant imagine very many people ordered this, I wish I had!

April 27, 2022 12:28 PM (#karlification)

dylan (HMC): Karl, do you have any scans of the j-card for the Avant Garde demo tape Somethin' Different!? The only "cover" we have is (I believe?) a fan-made thing that I suspect was just scanned out of the Rivers' Edge book.

Karl: i have the j card (2 of them i think?), but have never scanned it, i always assumed it was out there? I can make this happen for the edification of the =wp=

deckra: are you able to confirm/deny that "Lullaby for Wayne" is about Wayne Lo? most of the fan base has decided it's not, but it'd still be nice to have some confirmation

Karl: while i dont have the chain of circumstantial evidence in front of me, I did conclude long ago that it was in fact inspired by a true story that involved Wayne Lo, but the song isnt directly about him and his specifics. I know Rivers saw the headline/rough info looong ago in CT and went off on that, without actually doing research etc. SO i think he later denied it was about Wayne specifically, either because A, he forgot what inspired him in the first place (understandable), or B because he didnt want to "promote" or "help" the image of someone who had done actual bad stuff. There's more weird details but honestly i cant recall enough to speak without talking out my ass right now. Would have to do a deep dive in the archive.

April 26, 2022 6:39 PM (#karlification)

Burnst Jamp: alright, real question time: Do you still have a copy of the compilation CD "Beetbox 2 - Electric Boogaloo", the one that contains If You Listen and The Lesson? It's unbelievably obscure and through all my extensive research in the past I've never managed to get the cover or full tracklist. It's like, the holy grail of physical releases of your music (one of three comps with a Karlophone track, and the only release including any SFS song aside from the album), and from what I gather it was exclusively given to a handful of people in the UK. Need to see it with my own eyes

Karl:

Karl: and the guy included a note saying that they "gave away several hundred of them for free", which i imagine was the entirety of the run

April 26, 2022 8:20 PM (#karlification)

Karl: i would also like to submit the following:

April 26, 2022 8:21 PM (#karlification)

theangel: Karl, is it safe to say that Shmedly counts as an official member of Weezer, even though it was only for such a short period of time?

Karl: not safe to say that. I dont think anyone in the band would feel that way. Hired gun/friend

April 26, 2022 8:50 PM (#karlification)

greg: what's the deal with this goat punishment bootleg that has unreleased southern fried swing tracks on it https://www.discogs.com/release/6576391-Weezer-Goat-Punishment

Karl: idk, someone scraped it together. A shoddy ill-concieved collection! But thats the nature of bootlegs. The unreleased SFS tracks must have been gathered off the old SFS page - for a little while Pat and I hosted new tracks there, only I colored the links the same color as the background, so you had to CTRL-A to see that they were there.

deckra: that's how i rediscovered "Angel Wings"! we had no idea it existed until i stumbled across it. in fact, that's the only iteration of the page that was archived. do you have the other songs that were posted? they've been basically lost to time at this point

Karl: except on my shelves of raw SFS tapes and cds

April 27, 2022 12:30 PM (#karlification)

deckra: would you be willing to (re)share the songs that were already posted online? again, they've pretty much been lost to time, at least on the internet

Karl: theyll be part of a eventual SFS2 or somesuch release

April 28, 2022 7:27 PM (#karlification)

theangel: Do you know what Rivers means when he says this?

Karl: i know exactly what he means... but i couldnt possibly state it any better than he did there

April 27, 2022 7:27 PM (#karlification)

theangel: Karl, Friends or Wild Honey? Sunflower or Surfs Up? Smile or Pet Sounds? Today or SD/SN? BB85 or Love You?

Karl:
