It is the final known iteration of several songs derived from Catalog O' Riffs #393, which also includes titles such as "Another Lover", "Pull on the Trigger", "Set Me Right", "The Sweetest One of All", and "No Contact". A solo demo by Rivers Cuomo was released in 2020.

Overview

The song, when it was still called "The Sweetest One of All", was demoed several times by the band in September of 2002 at the S.I.R. rehearsal studios. It was then recorded during the band's second attempt at making Make Believe, at Grandmaster Recorders in Los Angeles, CA. The sessions lasted from July 22 to October 22, 2004. It was one of 12 songs that Rivers Cuomo asked to band to only concentrate on, which he felt were the right songs for the album. Until early 2005, the song was designated to be the tenth track. Ultimately the song was excluded from the final track list for unknown reasons and remains unreleased to this day.
Karl Koch named the 11 songs that were finished but not used for Make Believe "The Fallen Soldiers".

Though the full song recorded by the band remains unreleased, a short, rough clip of the song could be heard on the "Making of Make Believe" Enhanced CD bonus featurette (see below). Cuomo's original, slower-paced demo from July of 2004 was one of hundreds of demos leaked online through the demo storefront on riverscuomo.com on November 7, 2020. The song was purchased by a user a few days later on November 11, whereupon it was shared freely with fans. The demo was made available for purchase to all on November 22, as part of the digital compilation Alone IX: The Make Believe Years.

Lyrics

You're The One version

If you ever wondered
Does your life have meaning
Well let me tell you this
If you think about it
You deserve the credit
For much of what I did

You're the one who showed me the way
You're the one who gave me the confidence
You're the one who told me that I could win

I was so impatient
Looking for the answers
I showed you disrespect
Now I see the wisdom
In what you taught me
I'm glad you recollect

You're the one who showed me the way
You're the one who gave me the confidence
You're the one who told me that I could win

There's one more thing to tell you
And that is that I love you

You're the one who showed me the way
You're the one who gave me the confidence
You're the one who told me that I could win
You're the one who showed me the way
You're the one who gave me the confidence
You're the one told me that I could win

Set Me Right version

If you ever wondered
Does your life have meaning
Well let me tell you this
If you think about it
You deserve the credit
For much of what I did

You gave me a sense of purpose
You gave me a guiding light
I was lost with no direction
'Til you set me right

I was so impatient
Looking for the answers
I showed you disrespect
Now I see the wisdom
In what you taught me
I'm glad you recollect

You gave me a sense of purpose
You gave me a guiding light
I was lost with no direction
'Til you set me right

There's one more thing to tell you
And that is that I love you

You gave me a sense of purpose
You gave me a guiding light
I was lost with no direction
'Til you set me right
You gave me a sense of purpose
You gave me a guiding light
I was lost with no direction
'Til you set me right
