Overview
"Sacrifice" was initally written by Rivers Cuomo in 2001. Immediately following completion of (and before the release of) Weezer's fourth album, Maladroit, the band immediately began work on a fifth album. "Sacrifice" was demoed multiple times by Weezer throughout 2002. Only one recording, dated July 2, 2002, has been shared online with fans, though the song continued to be demoed thereafter, eventually being renamed "Flown Away" and "You've Flown Away." It is unknown how these later iterations differ from "Sacrifice." "Flown Away" was performed live once at a secret acoustic show at The Hotel Cafe in Los Angeles on November 3, 2002.
Cuomo's original demo was released as part of the digital compilation Alone VIII: The Maladroit Years in 2020.
Lyrics
July 2, 2002
Long ago you said to me
"Boy, you are the one"
Now you've gone and turned from me
Tell me what I've done
Tell me what I've done
When you made your sacrifice
Told me it was true
Now I've gone to pay the price
Tell me what to do
Tell me what to do
I believe
Now I see
I believe
Now I see
When you made your sacrifice
Told me it was true
Now I'm goin' to pay the price
Tell me what to do
Tell me what to do
