Overview

Matt Sharp wrote "California" and demoed it to 4-track as part of a collection of songs informally dubbed That's Incredible! during the fall of 1993, before the Rentals took shape as a band. The song was later properly demoed at Poop Alley Studios in the spring of 1995. This demo did not appear on the Rentals debut album, but appeared on the compilation The Poop Alley Tapes, released later that year. The song also appeared on the 2001 Rentals fan club-exclusive compilation Excellent Stocking Stuffer. The song was later reworked, with entirely new lyrics, into "Barcelona" for the Rentals' sophomore album Seven More Minutes in 1999.

Since the late 90s and early 2000s, "California" has frequently been misattributed to Weezer on lyric websites and peer-to-peer file-sharing networks.

The band Ozma covered the song for the 2010 Japanese tribute album Lost Out in the Machinery - Songs of the Rentals.

Lyrics

Woo-hoo, I need your huggin'
Come here, my east coast darlin'
Leave Boston, Mass. on the next flight
You'll love the beautiful Westside,
The beach, and gorgeous sunrise
Surf's up, the waves are rising high

I'm all alone, I need you here in Santa Monica
California

Woo-hoo, from here to Bel-Air
The Blue Bus will take us everywhere
Everyone's happy everywhere 'til now
From Vita to El Cerrito
Seven years up and down the west coast
Surf's up, the waves are rising high
