Gumby Tom, Columbus, Ohio: Is there any meaning at all behind Crab? (If so, what is it?)

Rivers: A heterosexual guys sexual frustration with a particular girl.

2006 fan interview

Rivers Cuomo wrote "Crab" in 2000. Cuomo is not known to have recorded a solo demo. Weezer is first known to have demoed the song as a band at Cuomo's home rehearsal space on October 27,[2] with additional demos recorded throughout the remainder of the year. On February 8, 2001, during the recording sessions for Green, Cuomo purportedly sang the lead vocals for "Crab" 22 times straight before he was satisfied with it.[3] "Crab" was one of fourteen songs from the Green sessions leaked prior to release. This unmastered version is over a half-minute longer than the final album mix.

A live version of the song was released on a French promotional CD ("3 Titres Inédits") alongside the release of the Green Album.

Lyrics

Crab if you wanna
She won't be coming down
Down, down, down
Crab if you wanna
She won't be coming down

Crab if you need it
She put her knickers on
On, on, on
Crab if you need it
She put her knickers on

She said she's feeling lonely
And I say that's okay
She won't be coming back 'round here, no way

She said she's feeling lonely
And I say that's okay
She won't be coming back 'round here, no way

Crab at the booty
'Tain't gonna do no good
Good, good, good
Crab at the booty
'Tain't gonna do no good
No, crab at the booty
'Tain't gonna do no good
