Overview
When I was a kid in the '80s, we had family friends that lived in Newport Beach, CA. They were a very interesting family, some with roots in old California surf culture. One of them was named ‘Mooch’ and he lived in Laguna Beach. At the time I knew him as a kid he was already in his late 60s, but still the quintessential laid-back surfer (think Sam Elliot looks). I think we just riffed on that name and would throw it around as just an imaginary surfer friend we had. So, it seemed like 'Mooks' would be a typical surfer guy nickname and a more unique name for the song than 'Surf's Up.'

"Mooks" appears as the third track of Generation Blue, a compilation released in 2024 that focuses on music from the 1990's Los Angeles geek rock scene. Prior to this official release, a fan-made live recording of the song was circulating (under the title "Surf's Up") and appears on the bootleg album Shine Like the Holy Grail (1995-1997).
"Mooks" was written by Rod Cervera in 1993 or 1994 to be used in Magpie, an earlier iteration of Supersport 2000. Following the dissolve of Magpie in 1994, the band would reform as Supersport 2000 and the song would be rewritten to fit the new band's style.[1]
An official music video for "Mooks" was released on June 4, 2024 and features previously unseen footage of Supersport 2000 performing in Los Angeles, California at the Pop in the Parking Lot event in 1996.[1]
