This nugget was originally slated to appear on an aborted album that became Pinkerton instead. According to Weezer uber-roadie Karl Koch's liners, the album had been "intended to be a 'space opera,' along the lines of Tommy or Jesus Christ Superstar." Yikes. But don't worry, the only thing remotely spacey about the song, except for a surprisingly well-placed theremin (!) solo, is the way it magically transports me back in time to the mid-90s. It's a hunk of pleasing power-pop that I probably would have put on my summer of '95 beach mixtape somewhere between, say, Superchunk and The Breeders. Over a typically fuzzy guitar hook, Rivers Cuomo sings both parts of a "conversation" between an eager nerd who consoles a girl after a bad breakup, all the while trying to get into her pants. Unfortunately, she's drawn to guys who treat her like shit and doesn't see our slight hero in the sweater and chunky glasses as anything more than a friend. A fun relic from a more innocent time, it's one that Weezer fans will definitely want to seek out while waiting for that next album.
