Rivers Cuomo wrote "It's Not the Same as It Was" in contention for what would eventually become Weezer's eponymous 2019 Black Album. In 2023, a demo of the song was worked on with producer Klas Åhlund in contention for Weezer's twentieth album.[1][2][3] In June of 2024, Cuomo released some demos of the song as part of the digital demo compilation Alone XIII: The Pacific Daydream Black Years.
