"1,000 Years" is a song written by Rivers Cuomo in 1997 and played at solo shows in Boston that same year.

Background

"1,000 Years" is not known to have been demoed, though it is known to have been performed live twice. During the first performance, Cuomo explained the song by saying "It's about how bad shit happens to really nice people." A bootleg of the second performance was recorded onto Cuomo’s own DAT tape and later distributed to fans via the Rivers Correspondence Board. The recordings in circulation feature Mikey Welsh, Kevin Stevenson of The Shods, and Zeph Courtney of Chevy Heston.

Lyrics

Starry sky, oh starry sky
Tell me if you can
Why do all your favorites fall?
Is this in your plan?

Every hour of every day
She’ll await for you
She’ll await a thousand years
To save herself for you

Bible man, oh bible man
Tell me if you know
Why do all the strayed and vain
Wreck upon the shore?

Her love is like a sea
Crashing endlessly

Every hour of every day
She’ll await for you

Save herself for you
