The Weezer Recording Chronology (WRC) is an attempt by Weezerpedia to create a successor to the Recording History, a detailed list of every demo, bootleg, and studio recording by the band Weezer and any directly associated bands, written by Karl Koch from the years of 2000 to 2011. Pages are separated by years.
This page details the years 1994 through 1997. It contains demos recorded for Songs From The Black Hole, the demos and recording sessions of Pinkerton, events and recordings that led up to them, and the beginning of Weezer's first hiatus.

"Susanne" acoustic for Susanne Filkins, February 18, 1994
Susanne Filkins was an A&R manager at Geffen Records, and the inspiration behind the song "Susanne". Weezer went into her office one day and surprised her by playing the song acapella with Wilson on acoustic guitar, which reportedly moved her to tears. Karl Koch recorded the moment to microcassette, and Susanne was given a copy on cassette.[1]

Suburban Advantage EP, spring 1994
"Suburban Advantage" was an alias Wilson used for his solo music and was also the name given to his first "proper" demo tape. The drums were done with a Dr. Rhythm drum machine, in an attempt to achieve a "different" sound. About 8-10 copies were made and given to friends and industry contacts at Geffen.

That's Incredible! demos, April 1994
This was a series of 16 or 24-track recordings by the band that would eventually become The Rentals, named That's Incredible! by Tom Grimley. These recordings were done at Hellcentro, a TV voiceover studio owned by guitarist Rod Cervera's father. The lineup consisted of Sharp on vocals, lead guitar, and bass, Rachel Haden on vocals, Cervera on rhythm guitar, and Wilson on drums.
These sessions would be scrapped in the spring of 1995, when the band were able to record with Tom Grimley at Poop Alley Studios.[2]

Undone - The Sweater Song radio edits, June(?) 1994
Geffen Records wanted to release a single edit of "Undone - The Sweater Song" for radio stations,[3] so Rivers Cuomo asked for an edit to be made with the opening shortened and a short fade-out after the last "ooo". An edit with these changes, along with a shortened solo, was sent to the band to review. Cuomo approved the edit without noticing the shortened solo, as he had fast forwarded to hear the fade-out. After receiving promo copies a week later, they discovered the solo edit and demanded a new one be made without it.[4]
Somewhere between 750 and 2000 copies exist of the initial radio single, and are more common than the intended edit.[4]

Blue Album B-Sides, July 9—10, 1994
When time came for "Undone - The Sweater Song" to be released in Australia, Weezer were asked to record B-sides for the single release. The session was supposed to last one day, but the studio they were working in went haywire and they had to book a session at Ocean Way Studios for the next day.[4][5] to complete them. Paul du Gré helped engineer these sessions.[4]
Recorded during this session were "Susanne", "My Evaline", an unreleased version of "Jamie", and another version of "Mykel and Carli" (the version from the Blue Album sessions in New York was deemed too hard to salvage.)

Horizontal Boogie Bar concert, November 27, 1994
Weezer played a show at the Horizontal Boogie Bar on November 27, 1994. This show was recorded directly from the soundboard by the band, and mixed by Rivers Cuomo for B-sides to the "Buddy Holly" single.[5] Later, in February 1995, the performances of "My Name Is Jonas", "Buddy Holly" and "In the Garage" were given to the Radio 3 program De 4 a 3 by the band's manager to air as promotion for their upcoming shows in Spain, however they were given the false story of the recordings being from their performance at the Splash Club in London the previous month.[8][9]
More shows were recorded at this time, however the specific information is currently unknown.[4]

Leaves: Stuff 8-track, 1994(?)
A demo recording of five songs written by Rivers Cuomo's brother, James Kitts (then known as Leaves Cuomo). It's unknown if Rivers had any involvement in these recordings, though is speculated to have provided vocals for one song. The recordings may have been done when Rivers returned to Connecticut in December 1994 to spend time with family, but this is merely speculation.

"Say It Ain't So" remix session, January 1995
When "Say It Ain't So" was announced as the next single, the band requested a new mix be made, as they felt the original mix sounded "a little dead and too stiff".[4] They also asked for the mix to be included on further pressings of the Blue Album, and it became the standard mix from there on.[5] This mix was made by Chris Shaw on an unknown date in January 1995.

Rivers, Pat, and Karl recordings in Germany, February 1995
While on the World Domination Tour, Sharp had a family emergency and had to fly back home, which left the rest of the band stuck in Germany with some free time after having to cancel the next six shows. Cuomo, Wilson, and Koch made use of a rented studio in Hamburg, with Wilson and Koch recording for Southern Fried Swing, Wilson recording some demos by himself, and Cuomo working on Songs from the Black Hole. It is unknown exactly what recordings were done except for the three listed below.

Songs from the Black Hole, as of February 1995
Songs from the Black Hole (hereby referred to and initialized as SFTBH) was intended to be the follow-up to the Blue Album, a space-themed rock opera inspired by the likes of Jesus Christ Superstar and Les Misérables. Cuomo would spend the Christmas break of 1994 and occasional time in the beginning of 1995 writing and demoing new music for this project, while sometimes slotting in older songs to fit the story as well (it is noted where a recording has already been listed). The first demoed tracklist is largely made up of recordings from Christmas break in 1994 and when the band was stuck in Germany in February.

Return of the Rentals and For the Ladies, spring 1995
The Rentals would record at Poop Alley Studios for six weeks[11] in the spring of 1995. These sessions produced 19 songs in total, which initially weren't intended for release.[11] Two separate projects were recorded: one dubbed For the Ladies, which was a more calm and relaxed collection of songs, and Return of the Rentals, which would be bought by Madonna's record label Maverick Records and released on October 24, 1995.
"California" would see release on The Poop Alley Tapes later in 1995. Two tracks from For the Ladies, "So Soon" and "The Love I'm Searching For", were released as B-sides on select "Friends of P." singles. It would be released in full on Matt Sharp's official website in December 2005.[12]

Jocobono, late spring-early summer 1995
Jocobono was a band from Boston, Massachusetts that was active from mid 1995 to early 1997.
Mikey Welsh left Heretix in early 1995 and joined the new lineup of local band Stompbox (who then changed their name to Slower).[13][14] However, after months of discussions with Billy O’Malley and Todd Perlmutter about forming a band, Welsh joined them for rehearsals that would eventually lead to the recording of their first and only album, Jocobono. The album was recorded over a period of two days at New Alliance Studios in Boston.[15]

"You Gave Your Love to Me Softly" for Angus soundtrack, June 2, 1995
This 24-track session was recorded at Bearsville Studios in Woodstock, New York, which was a converted church. Cuomo had initially written "Wanda (You're My Only Love)" based on an early draft of the script for the movie Angus (a production of Atlas/Third Rail Management, who also managed Weezer), but it was deemed "too literal", and "You Gave Your Love to Me Softly" was submitted instead. This version was produced by Rob Cavallo, known for his lengthy portfolio with Green Day, and also the son of Bob Cavallo, one of Weezer's managers. Cuomo had recently gotten a surgical procedure performed on his right leg, thus he was on heavy medication and struggled with his vocals.

Kittymuzzle, late 1995
As Welsh's tenure with Jocobono continued, he and the band were invited to contribute to Boston band Grind's first album Kittymuzzle. Due to the band having no official bassist after a hiatus caused by bassist Rachel Steczynski being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1994, two people played on bass on the album.[16][17] Welsh played on 5 tracks while the whole band contributed handclaps to "Beasts".

Pinkerton sessions
These sessions marked the beginning of the almost year-long recording process of the album that would become Pinkerton. These songs, despite likely being recorded for the only partially-written SFTBH, were all recorded separately with little to no story continuity, in order to get a jumpstart on the second Weezer album.
"You Gave Your Love to Me Softly" was re-recorded at these sessions, as Rivers Cuomo felt his singing suffered after his leg operation.[4]

Pinkerton sessions at Sound City Studios, early January 1996
Recording sessions continued in early January 1996,[19] lasting about two weeks. New, non-SFTBH tracks such as "El Scorcho" and "Pink Triangle" were recorded, while Cuomo was also holding on to the SFTBH concept by this point. Some of the songs initially recorded at Electric Lady Studios were re-recorded to see if a new studio would make a difference, of which only one Electric Lady recording was deemed better.[19]

Continued Pinkerton sessions at Sound City, spring 1996
By this time, the SFTBH idea had been abandoned in favor of the concept that became Pinkerton, and thus the two songs recorded in January were canned with it. These sessions happened during Cuomo's spring break at Harvard and were mainly just continued work on the sessions from January.

First Seven More Minutes sessions in London, UK, spring 1996
This was the beginning of an over 2-year-long recording process for the album that would become Seven More Minutes by the Rentals, which also marked the beginning of Sharp consistently leaving early during recording sessions to go to London and work on the album.
"We Have a Technical", spring 1996
While in England, Sharp was asked to contribute to a Gary Numan tribute album; however, with all the other members of the band being unavailable, he asked Damon Albarn from Blur to help with recording.

Final Pinkerton sessions, May-August 1996
These sessions saw the introduction of engineer Dave Fridmann, in for Joe Barresi after the band kept asking for the album to sound like Clouds Taste Metallic by the Flaming Lips. "The Good Life", "Across the Sea", "Falling for You", and "Butterfly" had been written by the time of the previous sessions, but weren't tracked until these sessions in the summer. Most of the album was worked to completion by June at Sound City, with "Butterfly" being recorded at 6 in the morning on the final day of recording. "Devotion", "Waiting on You", and "You Gave Your Love to Me Softly" were also completed for B-sides, while "I Swear It's True" and "Getting Up and Leaving" were nearly completed but abandoned. Recording later moved to Sunset Sound Recorders in Los Angeles, where Rachel Haden recorded her vocals for "I Just Threw Out the Love of My Dreams" in one take, while recording a few extra takes just in case. By this point, Sharp had left to continue work on Seven More Minutes, so during a last-minute session at Rumbo Recorders in Canoga Park, Adam Orth was called in to play bass. This session resulted in "Tragic Girl" being worked on but eventually abandoned. Mixing was done with Jack Joseph Puig at Ocean Way Recording in Los Angeles, and the intro to "Across the Sea" was recorded on August 13. The album was released on September 24.

"Pink Triangle" B-side sessions, spring 1997
While Sharp was recording in London with the Rentals, there was a lot of doubt from the rest of the band that they were going to be able to get him back to America in time for the summer tour with No Doubt. "Pink Triangle" was also on track to be released as a single (which never happened in a large capacity, only promotional copies) and they didn't have any B-sides. Both Geffen Records and the band's management felt that if the song were to be released as a single, it would need a lot of cleaning up. Studio time at Fort Apache was booked for Cuomo's spring break at Harvard, where two bass players were auditioned: Scott Riebling (then of Letters to Cleo) and an unknown person named Alex (who Cuomo described as a "bald guy with earrings"). The band ultimately chose Riebling, who played bass on the mostly re-recorded version of "Pink Triangle" with new guitars for radio, alongside completely new versions of "I Swear It's True" and "Getting Up and Leaving".
Actually, there were a few levels of auditions. First there was a cattle call type audition that was held during the daytime at one of boston's Lansdowne street clubs, Axis. I would guess that there were at least 20 bass players there, and I was the first to play. This was the start of what ended up being the most amazing few weeks of my life. Back then, and even to this day, if anyone asks me who my favorite bands of all time are I will retort, the Beatles, Zeppelin, and Weezer. Damn, was I nervous, but totally in heaven. I will never forget the feeling of the guys kicking in with Tired of Sex, at that time my favorite weezer song, my favorite (still together) rock band with ME on bass!! Holy sh*t. I played a few more songs, then Rivers asked if I had a fender bass, and if I could bring it to the next phase of auditions. I thought my '71 gibson les paul signature bass was pretty cool, certainly quite rare, but it didn't have that charasteristic weezer sound.
The next phase of auditions was held at a Boston recording studio called New Alliance. At this point the 20 or so bass players had been narrowed down to five, and we were asked to pick a different set of tunes to play than we had auditioned with the first time.
The last phase of the audition was held at Fort Apache studios, where Pink Triangle would ultimately be completed. Two bass players were invited to this session/audition, me and Mikey Welsh (I think??????) We were both asked to record our version of the bass for Pink Triangle on the original 24 track tape. Mikey (I thought????) went first, and I was told he took about 45 minutes. I went second, took about 10 minutes, then I was cheerfully told by Rivers that I got the gig!
Actually, the entire song was scrapped except for the bells, the vocals, and the drums. All the guitars, bass, and keys for this track were totally recut. I remember how amazing Rivers was as a producer, totally helping guide me to a much better bass line than [either] Matt or I had originally come up with. He brought in this totally ancient EML synthesizer [the Electrocomp 101] that used 1/4 inch patch cables to route the sounds within the instrument. This is a really difficult synth to tune, and get a good sound out of, but the tone rivers got out of it was bigger than a freight train.
Actually, both of these songs were totally recut, drums and all. I wasn't even aware that there were versions of these songs that had been recorded before those Fort Apache/Pink triangle dates. I think there were two more songs that we worked on other than I swear it's true, and Getting up and leaving.

The validity of the statement about there having been two extra songs recorded is unclear.

Homie album, Fall 1997
An entire album's worth of Homie songs was recorded at Fort Apache with Fred Eltringham (of the Gigolo Aunts) on drums, and Drew Parsons (of Tracy Bonham's band) on bass. The tapes were never mixed down, and no track sheets have turned up, thus the track listing is unavailable. There has been debate about the completeness of the recordings, as Koch considers it a complete album while Cuomo says only the drums were recorded. The sessions, completed or not, finished sometime in November of 1997[21] . It is not clear when sessions started.
Homie "pro demo", winter 1997/1998
This demo was engineered by Ross Humphries with Eltringham, Parsons and keyboardist Jay Buckley.
