Overview

"Mirror Image" utilizes a melody similar to that of the demo "Expatriates in Paris", originally written in consideration for the what would eventually become the 2014 album Everything Will Be Alright in the End, although it's unknown whether this similarity is a coincidence. The song ends with a voice note recorded by Cuomo during the songwriting process. Cuomo said of this addition:

I couldn't come up with the lyric for the last line and I was trying all these things. Finally, I gave up and I just sent it to Jake, because I like melody. He's like "yeah, this is great!" And there's a couple spots on the album where he just like includes these things where you're like "you're not supposed to show that to people!"

I like what I eventually settled on. Not in the voice note, but months later I found it. It finally occurred to me. It was one of those things where I know the answer's going to come but there's just no way I can sit here and try to force it. I just have to put it away for a while and then one day it'll just pop into my head. And hopefully that's before we release the album, and that's what happened luckily.”

Lyrics

She is my mirror image
Showing me who I am
Until the day that we shatter
She helps me understand

She is my mirror image
Showing me who I am
Until the day that we shatter
I will know where I stand

Heaven can't save this man
Heaven can't help this man
Heaven turns his back on this man
Heaven shuts the door on this man
