Overview
A short snippet of "Clever Trick" was played on Episode #21 of the Weezer-themed podcast We'z Talkin' Weez' 2 Thee, on which Cropper was a featured guest. Commenting on the creation of the song, Cropper said that the song was influenced by the psychedelic rock of the 70s (citing the bands Pink Floyd, Allman Brothers, and Jimi Hendrix, specifically) Of the lyrics, Cropper said that some of it originated from yoga chanting manuals translated from Sanskrit into English, adding "Because my parents were hippies and raised me that way".
Jason Cropper performed the song live for the first time during a "Golden Hour" stream on YouTube and Instagram on October 22, 2020[1].
Clever Trick was released as the fourth single for Cropper's forthcoming album on June 21, 2021.
