Right Music, Price At Lingerie

Club owners caught in the throes of diminishing returns may want to take a tip from Club Lingerie, whose busiest night of the week is Monday -- of all nights. The veteran Hollywood venue attracts a tres hep crowd by offering a smattering of mostly good local bands at the right price -- for free.

And some of the bands, all of whom have to play without fee for the system to work, are actually getting a return on their investment. Such Monday night regulars as Weezer, Muzzachunka, Mother Tongue, Rob Rules and Candlebox have landed coveted label deals, while simultaneously building local followings.

There's nothing particularly nice about the cavernous club -- its only attempt at art direction consists of two unlit beer signs and a Horace Goldin poster. Yet the lack of distractions helps to make the music the club's one and only focus.

The raised stage and the solid sound system, which thankfully isn't engineered by someone hellbent on blowing out what's left of the audience's eardrums, gives clubgoers the opportunity to scrutinize at least four groups a night -- enabling them to decide which bands to spend money on in the future.

Currently, the band to check out at Lingerie is 1,000 Mona Lisas. Contrary to its name, the band consists of three large, bald guys who play a high-test blend of punk-rap that lingers long after the trio exits the stage. A Mona Lisas' highlight includes a spunky punk cover of "Bennie and the Jets," which manages to resuscitate the Elton John tune from the classic rock morgue.

And hey, even if you don't like them, what's to lose?
