Appearences

Overview

"You Gave Your Love to Me Softly" is notably short, at only 1:58. In this song, Rivers Cuomo sings about one night with a girl that "lingers on and on and on." It is quick, up-beat song with a solo that mirrors the vocal melody. When asked by a fan about the lyrical reference to Bijan perfume, Cuomo responded: "I have a thing for old lady perfume (on young ladies)." [1] The original 1995 recording is featured on the soundtrack to the film Angus. It was produced by Rob Cavallo. This version is shorter, at 1:51. The song was re-recorded during the Pinkerton sessions, and retains the rough sound of those sessions. This version is slightly slower, resulting in a longer running time.

Although satisfied with the recording, the song was relegated to b-side status, appearing on retail versions of "El Scorcho".

A cover of the song by the band Wavves was included as the b-side to the 7"-vinyl single "Fake Smiles and Nervous Laughter." Online music critic Anthony Fantano called the cover "a lazier, worse performed version of the track" and "a lackluster cover of a great song."

Lyrics

You gave your love to me softly
I heard your heart beating true
Still your Bijan lingers on and on and on
You gave your love to me softly

When I'm feeling blue and lonely
All I have to do is think of you
We had just one night but it lingers on and on and on
You gave your love to me softly

La-la-la you sang to me
Baby, don't you cry
Put your arms around me child
And lay with me tonight

You gave your love to me softly

Whoa, la-la-la you sang to me
Baby, don't you cry
Put your arms around me child
And lay with me tonight

La-la-la, la-la-la, la-la-la-la-la-la-la
