Old LP
(2019)

Old LP is that dog.'s fourth album, released 22 years after their previous record Retreat from the Sun.

Overview

Old LP was written, recorded, and produced over the course of eight years, starting with that dog.'s slate of reunion shows in 2011. It is their first record without Petra Haden. Touring to promote the record was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior to this, Allison Crutchfield of Swearin' joined the band for several live performances. The album features contributions from Maya Rudolph, Randy Newman, Josh Klinghoffer (formerly of the Red Hot Chili Peppers), Joey Waronker, and dozens of classical session musicians.

Writing

Waronker explained the processes behind each of the album's 11 songs in an interview with Consequence of Sound on October 3, 2019.

Recording

The band released a short documentary in September of 2019, directed by Mary Wigmore, about the album's title song. It is dedicated to the memory of Charlie Haden.

Reception

Old LP holds a score of 85 out of 100 from Metacritic, indicating "Universal Acclaim." It has been praised for simultaneously staying true to the band's original sound while also demonstrating considerable artistic growth.
