Overview
"You're the One" was written by Rivers Cuomo. It is one of several iterations of Catalog O' Riffs entry #393 written from 2002 to 2004. Cuomo recorded at least one demo of "You're the One" at S.I.R. Rehearsal Studios in July of 2004, a few days before Weezer began recording Make Believe at Grandmaster Recorders in Los Angeles. The song was one of twelve that Cuomo instinctively felt was right for the album.[1] The sessions lasted from July 22 through October 22, 2004. The full-band version of the song featured a much faster tempo than Cuomo's original demo. Ultimately, the song was not used for the album. Karl Koch later designated the eleven unused songs from the Make Believe sessions "The Fallen Soldiers".
Though the full-band recording remains unreleased, a short clip of the song is audible on the "Making of Make Believe" Enhanced CD video on copies of Make Believe (see Audio). Cuomo's solo demo from July of 2004 was one of hundreds of demos leaked online through the demo storefront on riverscuomo.com on November 7, 2020. The song was purchased by a user a few days later on November 11, whereupon it was shared freely with fans. The demo was made available for purchase to all on November 22, as part of the digital compilation Alone IX: The Make Believe Years.

Lyrics
If you ever wondered
Does your life have meaning
Well, let me tell you this
If you think about it
You deserve the credit
For much of what I did
You're the one who showed me the way
You're the one who gave me the confidence
You're the one who told me that I could win
I was so impatient
Looking for the answers
I showed you disrespect
Now I see the wisdom
In what you taught me
I'm glad you recollect
You're the one who showed me the way
You're the one who gave me the confidence
You're the one who told me that I could win
There's one more thing to tell you
And that is that I love you
You're the one who showed me the way
You're the one who gave me the confidence
You're the one who told me that I could win
You're the one who showed me the way
You're the one who gave me the confidence
You're the one told me that I could win
