Overview
As with all tracks on Seven More Minutes, "Getting By" was written by Matt Sharp while spending time in Barcelona, Spain.[1] "Getting By" was released as promotional-only CD[2] and cassette[3] singles. The cassette release features a version of "Hello, Hello" with additional Petra Haden vocals. An alternate mix done by Chris Shaw was included on the demo and outtake compilation Little Russell Street.
The song’s opening chant of “kawaba, kawaba, kawaba” was inspired by a ritual performed by director Francis Ford Coppola, who employed the ritual of chanting the nonsense word “puwaba” three times, for luck, with his crew at the beginning of every production (as seen in the 1991 documentary Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse).[4][5]
Personnel
- Matt Sharp - vocals, bass, Moog, extra guitars

Music video
The music video for "Getting By" was directed by Jason Ruscio, who had previously edited the video for "Friends of P."[6] The video was shot in Barcelona, Spain on March 18, 1999.[7]
Lyrics
Kawaba, Kawaba, Kawaba, hey!
I know a girl, lives off the coast of Spain
Twenty-one in the prime of her life
Friends are the most important things she's got
And she don't need much to get by
It's been a long long time since I felt that way
Maybe all the way back to high school
But, lately, I've felt like an old fat man
With her I lie and say I'm a young fool
And we don't really care about much, no
We don't need to lie
We got nothing in common that I can see
We drink on, we drink on, we drink on
And get by
Well, she don't care too much for vegetables
And she hates rude American men
Questions if I'm balding and I deny
And she laughs and she laughs with her friends, oh
But I don't really care too much, no
I don't need to lie
We got nothing in common that I can see
We drink on, we drink on, we drink on
And get by, getting by
We'll get by, getting by
Yeah, yeah, yeah,
She don't really care about me, no
There's no reason to lie
We got nothing in common and we both agree
To drink on, and drink on, and drink on
And, yeah, we don't really care about much
We don't really care too much
We don't really care about much
We drink on, we drink on, we drink on
And get by
We're getting by
