Fan recollection
Attendee Sean wrote about the concert for angelfire.com/weezerisdope:[1]
OK, here's the situation: I just saw Weezer at the Hellenic centre in Vancouver. Before the show I saw Carli and I introduced myself [she came up with her roommate, Mike (not Mykel)] and she's the nicest person I've ever met. Well, she didn't care for my bones or feed me ice cream cones. I also met some guys from Limblifter, they're nice. Last night, I couldn't wait for the concert. It was like Christmas Eve for me. I couldn't get to sleep until 2 AM (and I had to be up by 6).
Anyway, Superdrag opened and I forced my way to the front. They had messy hair.
Rivers wore a cardigan and his hair was messy, Matt wore his Nabisco Research shirt, 3 days unshaven face and messy hair. Brian looked cool, he looked Japanimated and he had messy hair. I didn't really see Pat, but he had great hair. He looked directly at me a couple of times (but maybe it just looked that way through his glasses.
The concert was just an excuse for me to rock out and goof off. Everyone was yelling "Weezer, Weezer, Weezer!" I was yelling "Hammer, Hammer, Hammer!" They opened with Tired of Sex and Rivers played the Moog part on his taped up guitar. I did little actions for specific lyrics. Why Bother Macarena? I did similar actions for these lyrics: "I'd rather keep wackin" "Wrestle with Jimmy" "Turns out I just pulled myself"
In Undone they did a cool talking part. It's familiar but I just can't place it.
Someone said that Matt was withdrawn and may have been pissed at Rivers. He was soooo into it tonight. Jumpin' and Humpin'. But just in case, I brought two pieces of paper. One said "Smile Matt" and when I held it up he read it and did a puppy dog frown. The other one said "Can I have a pick?" And, well, here I am with Matt's pick. Handed down to the security guard and then to me. That was the nicest the security guard ever was. He confiscated the guy beside me's bootleg.
They left mid-show and said "See ya next time." But Karl brought out a lower microphone and I yelled "Butterfly" and everybody cheered. There was a lot of Shushing during that song. Then the rest of the band come out and and played a few more songs, finishing with Surf Wax. "SMOKE DOPE!"
After the show Carli gave me a backstage pass sticker. I went backstage with my friend Pat and backstage was a long hallway (what did they expect if the venue was a Greek Orthodoxe Church?). Rivers was at the end of the hallway, just outside. Unfortunately, one didn't need backstage passes to be outside so there was a mob of fans. Rivers did sign my Pinkerton lyric book. He didn't sign my Harvard boxers. I then said, "Thanks. You're a doll." That's my new catch phrase. I was going to warn Rivers about the planned influx of letters from disgruntled Indianapolonians but some girl interrupted me, saying, "I'm half Japanese." Pat said we'd better go.
