To edit the featured quote page, see here.

Weezerpedia's featured quote is an excerpt of text related to the bands that Weezerpedia covers. The source for a featured quote can be either internal to our wiki (i.e. a quote lifted from the more than 400 interviews, transcripts, and album reviews archived on our site) or external (i.e. a Rivers Cuomo tweet from December 2022).

Featured quotes can be a lot of different things. You can kinda think of it as a featured "primary source" - transcriptions of something someone actually said, passages of written text, text with quotations from multiple speakers, etc. If its text and its relevant to our wiki, it probably will work!

Instructions

Getting started

Choose a month

Check out the table on the Weezerpedia:Featured quote page, and find a month that isn't complete yet. Category:Incomplete featured content lists all featured content pages that need editing.

Let's say you select March 2023, for example.

Find a quote

Find some text that you would like to showcase on the Main Page of Weezerpedia. The aforementioned List of interviews, List of transcripts , and Category:Album reviews are good places to look if you want somewhere to start. People always seem happy to give suggestions in our Discord server. Let's say we're going to feature text from a Karl's Corner post from March 2000.

What you'll find on an "incomplete" featured page

Prior to being edited by users, featured content pages are all created by site admin at the beginning of the calendar year and left "incomplete." Looks like this:

Featured video help 4.png

If you open up a page like this to edit it, you'll see:

{{Template:Featured page header|year=2023|month=March|pagetype=quote|edited=}}
<onlyinclude><includeonly>{{Weezerpedia:Featured quote February 2023}}</onlyinclude></includeonly>

Looks kinda confusing and strange! Don't worry. All you need to do is...

Copy from a previous month

The easiest way to feature a quote is to update the wikitext from a previous month. You can pull the formatting from a past month, replace a few details, and you will have a readymade page.

Sticking with our example above, we'd navigate to Weezerpedia:Featured quote February 2023, hit edit, and copy everything there. We'd then dash back to the March 2023 page, and replace all the content there with the wikitext on our clipboard.

Update the featured page header

Our page will now look like this:

<noinclude>{{Template:Featured page header|month=February|year=2023|pagetype=quote|edited=yes}}</noinclude>
{{Featured quote code|headline=[[Brian Bell]] on his first impressions of [[Weezer]]|speaker=Brian Bell|quote=I was really impressed with Rivers' guitar playing and singing ability, I just saw a future for this band. I gave them my phone number, just thinking maybe my band could play a show with them or something. That was my intention, just to hang out, get to know them, and play shows with them. And they were cool, and they saw me at a party. I talked to Rivers afterwards, and this was the second time we talked. We probably spoke about ten minutes at the most.|source=[[Rolling Stone article - November 3, 1994]]|link=[[Rolling Stone article - November 3, 1994|see full transcript]]}}

The "featured page header" template gives this page its basic structure. You only need to update one small piece of it: change the month name to the month of the page you're editing:

{{Template:Featured page header|year=2023|month=March|pagetype=quote|edited=yes}}

Update the "Featured quote code" template

the "source" parameter populates this section
the "link" parameter populates this section

This template has parameters:

  • headline - a short caption for the quote to give context, with internal/external linking where appropriate. a date is important (i.e. to avoid giving a default impression that the person said this thing recently).
  • speaker - this also tells the template what picture to call
  • quote
  • source - this is the text that appears in the top image at right
  • link - this is a bit of a redundant parameter, since it's almost always the same thing as above, but as a piped link for formatting. It's the text that appears in the bottom image at right

Updating for our new featured quote it looks like this:

{{Featured quote code|headline=[[Karl's Corner]] entry, [[March 3]], [[2000]]|speaker=Karl Koch|quote=Well, folks, I'm outta time. [[The Special Goodness tour diary - Spring 2000|The Special Goodness west coast spring tour]] is looming, and I gotta get my ass to the west coast. The last page or 2 of the [[Recording History|recording history]] (which takes us up to present day), will have to wait for now. Im sorry! If it makes you feel better, by the time I return to my trusty iMac, I shall have hung out with [[Rivers Cuomo|R.C.]], and will likely have a much better idea of what exactly went down on tape in [[Recording History - Page 10|'98]] and [[Recording History - Page 11|'99]], as well as a fresh perspective on whatever [[weezer]] is up to now... and my spider-senses are picking up little traces of news already.....

so, ill see you out there, and then back here in (i hope) late april.|source=[[Karl's Corner - 03/02/2000]]|link=[[:Category:Karl's Corner - 2000|see more Karl's Corner from 2000]]}}

Here's what our finished page should look like:

<noinclude>{{Template:Featured page header|month=March|year=2023|pagetype=quote|edited=yes}} </noinclude>
{{Featured quote code|headline=[[Karl's Corner]] entry, [[March 3]], [[2000]]|speaker=Karl Koch|quote=Well, folks, I'm outta time. Extra mile steps

Update the featured quote list

Weezerpedia tries to keep organized records of the content that it features, and we currently do this for quotes through the a simple chart. If you can update the chart, you'd be helping our site stay tidy!

You can access the current year's featured quote list here.

Table editing

Using 2023 as an example, the table should look like this:

Featured quote help 3.png

The column names for this table are listed toward the top of the page, in that first batch of code. They are: Month, Headline, and User. Here's what the code looks like to fill in a new row of the table:

|- this is a divider
| | [[Weezerpedia: Featured quote MONTH YEAR|MONTH YEAR]]
| | headline
| | user
|-  this is a divider

Filled in with details from our example above:

|-
| |[[Weezerpedia:Featured quote March 2023|March 2023]]
| |[[Karl's Corner]] entry, [[March 3]], [[2000]]
| |--[[User:MyNameIsJason]]
|-

The four tildes above create a link to your user page, and provide a timestamp of the edit. The repeating of the month and year in the first row ([[Weezerpedia: Featured article March 2023|March 2023]]<nowiki>) create what's called a "piped link." Everything to the left of the bracket character (<nowiki>|) tells the wiki what page you want to link to, and everything to the right of the bracket becomes display text. The example above gives you this: March 2023.
