Overview

The Harvard Crimson:Keep Fishing”—is that about a girl?

Rivers: I don't know! It's just—I don't know what I was saying. Maybe it was?

Harvard Crimson interview with Rivers Cuomo - April 26, 2006

"Keep Fishin'" was originally demoed as a band on May 27, 2001 during sessions at Monster Island Studios in Washington, D.C.. It was later demoed for the BBC Radio 1 program The Evening Session on June 13. The song was performed live at several shows throughout the summer of 2001.

After being properly recorded for Maladroit, Rivers Cuomo felt the recording was lacking in some way. When the band decided to release the song as the album's second single, he took it as a perfect opportunity to re-record the track entirely, embellishing it significantly. This new version, completed in the spring of 2002, is the so-called "Radio Version" featured on various single releases, as well as the music video.

The song "Mo' Beats", demoed by Weezer in the summer of 2002, explicitly references "Keep Fishin'" in its lyrics ("I got mo' beats than y'all / "Keep Fishin'" still seems small")

Julia Nunes, a Youtube star, performed a ukulele cover version of this song.

Muppet mayhem, and a bold foray into actually saying lines for Weezer. Fortunately, the Muppets are veteran actors and helped the guys ease into their parts.

- Karl Koch, Video Capture Device booklet, 2004

The music video for the song originally aired on July 8, 2002 and features the band as guests on The Muppet Show. It was directed by Marcos Siega, who previously directed videos for "Hash Pipe", "Island in the Sun", and "Dope Nose" (and would later direct the video for "Beverly Hills"). The production was the feature of an episode of MTV's Making The Video series. As a result of the video, many promotional and retail items featuring both Weezer and the Muppets were created, such as the CD single cover(s) and T-shirts.

Franklin Mint version

In May 2002, drummer Patrick Wilson produced a partial cover of the song at his home in Los Angeles, CA.[4] Wilson's version, which would later be released under his alias Franklin Mint, was entirely instrumental, featuring only synths and a drum track. Karl Koch described it "muzak/techno"[5] and praised it as "silky".[6] An MP3 of the unfinished version, temporarily titled "George Hartwig", was available on weezer.com for a short period of time in June 2002.

The completed version of the song was later included as a B-side on a US retail CD release of the Weezer single.

Lyrics

Album version

You'll never be
A better kind
If you don't leave (The world behind)
The world behind

Waste my days (Waste my days)
Drown aways (Drown aways)

It's just the thought of you
In love with someone else
It breaks my heart to see
You hangin' from your shelf

You'll never do
The things you want
If you don't move (And get a job)
And get a job

Waste my days (Waste my days)
Drown aways (Drown aways)

It's just the thought of you
In love with someone else
It breaks my heart to see
You hangin' from your shelf

Oh girl when I'm in love with you (Do-Wop)
Keep fishin' if you feel it's true (Do-Wop)
There's nothing much that we can do
To save you from yourself

Waste my days (Waste my days)
Drown aways (Drown aways)

It's just the thought of you
In love with someone else
It breaks my heart to see
You hangin' from your shelf

Oh girl when I'm in love with you (Do-Wop)
Keep fishin' if you feel it's true (Do-Wop)
There's nothing much that we can do
To save you from yourself

You'll never be
A better kind
You'll never be
A better kind

Waste my days (Woah-oh, Woah-oh)
Waste my days (Woah-oh, Woah-oh)
Waste my days (Oh, Oh)
Waste my days (Oh, Oh)
Waste my days (Woah-oh)
Waste my days
Waste my days
