Rivers Cuomo described Weezer's planned winter-themed album in early 2021 as stylistically similar to the works of Elliott Smith, featuring "lots of loss and despair and kind of quiet."[1] He has also stated that “I had the thought that winter sounds more like the original pre-blue album Weezer then The Blue Album does. There hasn't been this much acoustic guitar and finger picking in Weezer since our first year together”. Cuomo later reaffirmed this opinion on an episode of Conan O’Brien’s podcast "Conan Needs A Friend".
Weezer, under the Goat Punishment pseudonym, performed SZNZ: Winter in its entirety at The Troubadour in West Hollywood, California on September 19, 2022. Though phones were not permitted at the venue, a fan-bootleg was released in October of 2022.
