"Susanne" (sometimes rendered as "Suzanne") is a song by Weezer. Originally released as a B-side to "Undone - The Sweater Song," a remixed version later appeared on the soundtrack to the 1995 film Mallrats.

Appearances

Overview

"Susanne" was written by Rivers Cuomo and recorded to 8-track in January of 1994,[1] as a tribute to Susanne Filkins, an A&R production manager at Geffen Records. According to Karl Koch, during the period between the recording of The Blue Album in October 1993 and its release the following May, Filkins "became a big Weezer supporter, doing her best to keep the guys optimistic about their future with Geffen."[2] As reflected in the song's lyrics, Filkins reportedly did give Cuomo a spare winter coat and bake him brownies to cheer him up. Before Filkins was made aware of the song's existence, the members of Weezer surprised her with a performance in her office (a capella, with Patrick Wilson on acoustic guitar).[2] Filkins was reportedly moved to tears.[1]

The studio rendition of "Susanne" was recorded in summer of 1994 at Ocean Way Studios,[2] alongside B-sides "Mykel and Carli" and "My Evaline," and engineered by Paul du Gré. Cuomo's original lyric, "even Kurt Cobain and Axl Rose," was changed to "even Izzy, Slash, and Axl Rose" following the death of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain in April of that year.It appeared on CD and vinyl single releases of "Undone - The Sweater Song" in Europe. In 1995, the band was asked to permit the song's inclusion on the soundtrack of the Kevin Smith film Mallrats. At Electric Lady Studios, during Weezer's first recording sessions for what would eventually become Pinkerton, a new mix of the song was produced with Chris Shaw. This version has since become the definitive mix, appearing on the rarities compilation Dusty Gems & Raw Nuggets included with the Deluxe Edition of Blue, as well as on digital streaming platforms.

On January 18, 2009, albumsix.com user BringHomeTheTurkey uploaded high-quality CD rips of instrumental and "karaoke" mixes of "Susanne" sourced from a bootleg CD-R purchased on eBay in 2002.

While on tour in 2014 to support Everything Will Be Alright in the End, Weezer recorded a rendition of "Susanne" to a single 6-inch phonograph record at Third Man Records in Nashville, Tennessee, using the store's refurbished 1947 Voice-o-Graph machine.[3]

Lyrics

Susanne, you're all that I wanted of a girl
You're all that I need in the world
I'm your child
Make me blush, drive me wild
Susanne, you're all that I wanted

When I met you I was all alone
Cold and hungry cryin' on the phone
You baked me brownies and said "don't you cry"
And gave me the coat off your back

Susanne, you're all that I wanted of a girl
You're all that I need in the world
I'm your child, make me blush, drive me wild
Susanne, you're all that I wanted

Even Izzy, Slash, and Axl Rose
When I call you put them all on hold
And say to me that you'd do anything
And all I can do is say that
I haven't much I can give you in return
Only my heart and a promise not to turn
But I'll sing to you every day and every night
Susanne, I'm your man

Susanne, you're all that I wanted of a girl
You're all that I need in the world
I'm your child, make me blush, drive me wild
Susanne, you're all that I wanted
Of a girl
Yeah!
